With funding from The Rockefeller Foundation, a group of NPHI directors and public health colleagues met in 2002 in Bellagio, Italy, to share common experiences and discuss opportunities for collaboration. In 2004, the group reconvened in Helsinki, Finland, and declared their intention to forge a landmark alliance.
The International Association of National Public Health Institutes was formally launched in 2006 at the first General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 39 founding members and a one-year planning grant from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
With a subsequent five-year grant from The Gates Foundation, awarded in January 2007, we are expanding the network and operationalizing our shared vision of improving, linking, and advocating for NPHIs.
