Dr. Sawanpanyalert received his medical degree from Mahidol University in Bangkok in 1986. In 1995, he received a doctorate in public health from the School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. He has been director of the Thai NIH since 2000. His research interests include HIV/AIDS epidemiology, infectious diseases epidemiology, disease prevention and control, and substance abuse. 

From 1997 to 2000, he was director of the Division of Occupational, Environmental and Genetic Medicine, the Bureau of Medical Technical Development, and the Department of Medical Services at the Ministry of Public Health in Thailand.

In 2011 IANPHI awarded exceptional service awards to Dr.Sawanpanyalert. His institute was one of the founding members of IANPHI, and he serverd on the Executive Board.
