Turkey: Enhancing Laboratory Capacity

As Turkey’s focal point for laboratory diagnosis and disease surveillance, the Refik Saydam Hygiene Center is at the forefront of efforts to prevent and control threats from infectious disease agents. Laboratory work with many of these hazardous agents requires a specialized BSL-3 laboratory facility and procedures to ensure safe practices.

Achieving appropriate containment of hazardous disease agents is an urgent concern for the institute, which will use IANPHI funding to send two laboratorians to Emory University for intensive BLS-3 training.  Upon their return to Turkey, the trainees will assume responsibility for the institute’s biosafety activities.
