Study postnatal depression and its impact on child development

Maternal depression occurring within the first postnatal year is considered a risk factor for problems with children’s socioemotional and cognitive development. Few studies have measured the prevalence of postpartum depression in Mexico, and none have looked at its developmental implications.
An IANPHI seed grant is funding a study that will examine the correlates and predictors of postnatal depression and the developmental impact on children. Results will guide strategies for early detection, appropriate treatment, and planning of services targeted to high-risk populations.
