Bangladesh - Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (IEDCR)

Collect data to inform decisions on typhoid vaccine

Although typhoid fever is endemic in Bangladesh, credible measures of disease burden are lacking. Reliable estimates are needed to guide the design of prevention programs and resource allocation.

With IANPHI funding, the institute is conducting hospital-based surveillance for typhoid fever in four health facilities in Dhaka. Results will provide estimates of the disease burden, define priority age groups for public health interventions, and inform decision-making and resource allocation for typhoid vaccine. In the long-term, the study will strengthen the capacity of IEDCR and participating health facilities in data collection, data management, laboratory investigation, and surveillance system development.

The research will be conducted in collaboration with ICDDR,B.
