Proposed creation of an NPHI
Ghana's public health system has developed over the years into one of the strongest and most comprehensive on the African continent. Building upon the successes of the past two decades, Dr. Elias Sory, director of the Ghana Health Service, envisions a “Ghana CDC”-—a comprehensive national public health institute (NPHI), that will better respond to health threats and address the major causes of death and disability in Ghana. It will integrate the core functions of public health, such as surveillance, research, and response to outbreaks and other health issues, and address the major causes of mortality, morbidity, and suffering in Ghana. The project will leverage U.S. CDC expertise and PEPFAR funds to support vertical programs in the country and to carry out core functions such as maternal and child health, vaccine and immunization coverage, lab capacity, health promotion, environmental and occupational health, and training. This NPHI would be the go-to place for public health information for the Ministry of Health (MOH), policymakers, and the public of Ghana. It will be recognized in Africa and around the world for its world-class public health work. Because of its work, this institute will be a sought-after partner in efforts to understand how to address public health problems in Africa. Developing this institute is a critical health systems strengthening effort for Ghana.
