Last month, the Network of National Institutes of Health of South American Countries (RINS-UNASUR) and  the Network of the National Institutes of Health of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (RINSP-CPLP) held a workshop to assess the role of NPHIs in the monitoring and research of social determinants of health and health inequalities. The objective of the workshop, hosted by FIOCRUZ in Rio de Janeiro from May 7-9, was the development of a joint proposal by the attending NPHIs for establishing and implementing projects to generate evidence on social determinants of health (SDH).

Over 30 participants from 15 NPHIs attended the workshop’s lectures and discussions led by esteemed national and global public health leaders including Sir Michael Marmot, Dr. Paolo Buss, and others. Attendees discussed conceptual frameworks for approaching SDH projects, case studies in SDH field research, and strategic plans for strengthening NPHI involvement in SDH and health inequalities.
