Addressing the Changing Role of National Public Health Institutes

The Tanzanian National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) hosted IANPHI’s Eighth Annual Meeting from September 29 - October 2, 2013, in Arusha. Dr. Mwele Malecela, IANPHI Vice President and Director General of NIMR, welcomed the participants to three days of networking, sharing challenges and solutions with colleagues, and building stronger partnerships.

The central theme of this year’s meeting was “Public Health in the Post-2015 Era: The Changing Role of National Public Health Institutes.” It included topics such as NPHI Creation: Learning by Doing, with presentations by: Dr. Austin Mnthambala (Malawi), Dr. Jean de Dieu Ngirabega (Rwanda), and Dr. Elvira Singh (South Africa). Dr. Tim Evans (World Bank) spoke on Strengthening of NPHIs in Developing Countries - Challenges and Opportunities. Other topics included: Global Overview of NCDs; NPHIs in Policy Development; Maternal and Child Health; Infectious Disease Surveillance Systems; Neglected Tropical Diseases and Public Health Legislations.

IANPHI voted on the following member additions and changes. The new institutional members are Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Republic of Korea) and Public Health Institute (Malawi).  The new associate members are National Public Health Institute (Kenya), National Institute of Public Health (Quebec, Canada)Health Laboratories National Institute (Bolivia) and National Preventive Health Agency (Australia)

The assembly also confirmed the following new Executive Board Members:

Dr. Igbal Abukarigr, Public Health Institute (Sudan)
Dr. Amha Kebede, Ethiopian Health & Nutrition Research Institute (Ethiopia)
Dr. Cesar Cabezas, National Institute of Health (Peru)
Dr. L.S. Chauhan, India, National Centre for Disease Control (India)
Dr. Maris Jesse, National Institute for Health Development (Estonia)
Dr. Mahmudur Rahman, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (Bangladesh) will continue a second term as executive Board member. 

The gathering also included several award presentations. IANPHI was presented the "External Stakeholder's Award" from the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Dr. Wang Yu was given the “IANPHI Exceptional Service Award” for his work in the IANPHI Executive Board, and Tim Evans received the ”Friend of IANPHI Award” for his support to IANPHI from the very beginning of the Association.

Next year’s annual IANPHI meeting will take place in Marrakesh, Morocco, IANPHI's first global meeting in the WHO/EMRO region.
