UVRI Scientific and Mentorship Workshop Yields Results

The Uganda Virus Institute reports that two participants in IANPHI-sponsored scientific writing workshops will present their resulting research papers at the African Society of Laboratory Medicine scientific conference in South Africa in December 2012. In addition, the papers will be published in the African Journal of Laboratory Medicine.

With the support of IANPHI to attend the meeting, Research Officer Thomas Nsibambi will present his paper on the accuracy of in-house molecular assays for diagnosis of hepatitis E virus during surveillance in northern Uganda. Lab Researcher Prossy Namuwulya will present her abstract on the genotype distribution of the rubella virus and implications for a rubella vaccination initiative in Uganda.

Thge two scientists were among a dozen mentor-mentee pairs who participated in the workshops in June 2012 as part of UVRI's efforts to strengthen its scientific capacity through IANPHI and its mentorship program. The IANPHI team helped coordinate the grant writing workshops in Uganda pairing junior and senior scientists to collaborate and develop skills together.
