Pathom Sawanpanyalert and Paulo Buss Win Exceptional Service Awards

IANPHI awarded exceptional service awards at the 2011 Annual Meeting to Pathom Sawanpanyalert, director of the Thai NIH. and to Paulo Buss, former president of Brazil’s FIOCRUZ.  FIOCRUZ hosted the first IANPHI Annual Meeting in 2006. Both members were founding members of IANPHI, served on the Executive Board, and have been strong supporters of IANPHI’s mission.

Dr. Sawanpanyalert received his medical degree from Mahidol University in Bangkok in 1986. In 1995, he received a doctorate in public health from the School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. He has been director of the Thai NIH since 200. His research interests include HIV/AIDS epidemiology, infectious diseases epidemiology, disease prevention and control, and substance abuse. 

Dr. Buss
 is the Brazilian representative at the WHO’s Executive Board (2008-2011). He has served as the president of the World Federation of Public Health Associations since 2000. He has also written three books and more than 80 technical-scientific articles for scientific journals in Brazil and abroad. He has been granted the Medical Merit Honour, the highest health award in Brazil, and the Ordem do Rio Branco, both conferred by the president of the Republic.
