Institute Profile
The mission of the National Institute for Health and Development (NIHD) is to promote the health of the Estonian population and raise the quality of life through knowledge-based development and applied research activities. The NIHD was established in 2003 as a governmental organization under the Ministry of Social Affairs of Estonia. The institute is responsible for implementation of the following ongoing strategies and projects:
- National Tuberculosis Prevention Programme 2004-2007
- National Strategy on Prevention of Drug Abuse 2005-2012
- National Strategy for Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases 2005-2020
- National HIV/AIDS Prevention Strategy 2006-2015
- National Programme for Public Health Research and Development 1999-2009
- National Children’s Rights’ Strategy
- National Cancer Prevention Strategy 2007-2015
NIHD also carries out programs involving health promotion and capacity building as well as projects funded by the European Union, the Global Fund, and the World Health Organization.
