Institute Profile

In 1941,the Ecuadorian government created the National Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine "Leopoldo Izquieta Perez" as a scientific center for the Ministry of Public Health with the purpose of using scientific research to:

• Prevent, diagnose and control infectious, endemic, and epidemic diseases;
• Develop technologies for the production of safer preventive products used in human and animal health;
• The registry and sanitary control of drugs, biological products, food, hygienic products, cosmetics, pesticides, and other products 
• Training personnel

The mission of the National Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is to generate public health activities and quality services through diagnosis and research, health registration and control, and to serve as the national reference center and certification and to improve the health of the Ecuadorian population.
